Sin-ko-nah Tonic Syrup
sin-ko-nah tonic syrup
sin-ko-nah (sin-ko-nah) tonic syrup is a bittersweet mixer for the discerning drinker. Made in Aotearoa, all ingredients are sourced locally, with the exception of the cinchona bark, the natural source of quinine (the definition of tonic,) which is produced in hotter climates, being the native tree of Peru and Ecuador. The tonic is handcrafted, produced in small batches and contains no additives or preservatives. That’s what makes sin-ko-nah tonic syrup so special. In addition to cinchona, it is also infused with juniper and fresh lemons, limes and oranges to produce a very grown-up drink mixer.
The recipe harks back to the 1820s when tonic syrup was originally for troops serving in British India to ease fever and ward off malaria. Mixed with gin and soda, this highball cocktail became an icon of the colonial Empire.
Today, its pretty burnt orange colour and distinguished flavour profile make it popular with those who enjoy a sophisticated and refreshing tipple.
