P.L. Baronchi was a pioneer in introducing tea in southern Sri Lanka (previously known as Ceylon). Youngest son of Mr. Baronchi, P L Buddhadasa, after having acquired the necessary skills from his father, took to the cultivation of tea with an abundance of fresh ideas. Mr. Buddhadasa is regarded for having invested astutely in tea and for conducting his business with a considerable degree of success in the twentieth century. Mr. Buddhadasa opened up and planted Allen Valley and Andaradeniya Group in the Morawak Korale district. He constructed a state of the art tea factory on this property. Mr. Buddhadasa pioneered the ‘bought leaf’ concept in Sri Lanka long before social responsibility or ethical behaviour became buzz words. The concept of ‘bought leaf’ is where a privately owned tea estate accepts green leaf tea from small scale tea growers, financially empowering them. In later years, Mr. Buddhadasa went on to own Semidale estate in Akurassa and constructed Mahakanda tea factory in Neluwa, one of the biggest ‘bought leaf’ tea factories in the country. Now, Mr. P L Buddhdasa’s daughter-in-law, Dagula Lokuge is bringing this much loved Sri Lankan tea to tea lovers around the world.
